Even though your pain may be in your knee, we may examine your entire lower body including sitting/standing posture, gait or mechanics of your work/sport. The way you move is influenced by your back, hips, and ankles/feet. Muscle weakness, decreased flexibility or decreased mobility of a joint can impact surrounding joints. At CPTC, we do a thorough examination of all the joints, supporting muscles and ligaments of the knee and may also assess the lumbar spine, hips or ankles/feet for involvement.
The knee joint is comprised of 2 joints, Tibio-femoral and Patello-femoral. The fibula also attaches to the tibia just below the knee point.
• Tibio-femoral – the tibia (shin bone) and the femur (thigh bone), there are four ligaments that connect the two bones
• Patellofemoral – the patella (knee cap) and the femur
• Proximal Tibia-Fibula – the fibula is a non-weight bearing bone and lies on the outside of the shin, it connects to the tibia just below the knee and at the ankle
Commonly seen knee disorders include:
• Muscle strains
• Ligament sprains; for example medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
• Tendonitis/tendonosis/tendonopathy; example patellar tendinitis
• Meniscal injuries
• Patellofemoral syndrome/chondromalacia of the patella (Patella tracking dysfunction or runner's knee)
• Distal ilio-tibial band (ITB) syndrome
• Pes aserine bursitis
• Osteoarthritis of the knee
• Post-operative ligament repairs, meniscal debridements, meniscal repairs
• Post-operative total knee replacement or partial knee replacement
We are also trained to treat all post-surgical conditions following appropriate tissue healing parameters and the referring physician’s rehabilitation guidelines or protocol.
Depending on your individual needs, your treatment plan may include a wide variety of interventions such as joint mobilizations of the knee, soft tissue mobilizations to surrounding muscles, modalities (electrical stimulation or ultrasound), exercises for strengthening and/or stretching, posture education for sitting/sleeping/standing, orthotics to correct knee mechanics if needed, gait/walking training and running training if needed.
